People spend more time working than they do on any other waking activity, making the worksite a great place to promote healthy habits.

Employers know that it takes more than healthcare benefits to keep employees healthy and productive. Prevention is the best medicine. Recent overviews of the research show that employers who implement comprehensive worksite wellness programs see an average 25% reduction in sick leave, 26.5% reduction in health plan cost increases, 40.7% reduction in workers' comp, and 24% reduction in disability claims.

The overall goal of Maui County's NPAC worksite wellness task force is to increase the opportunities for physical activity and good nutrition in our workplaces. Our task force consists of volunteers from the American Cancer Society, Maui Family YMCA, the National Kidney Foundation of Hawai'i, Aloha House, and other organizations interested in supporting and providing wellness resources for local businesses.

In its first year, our task force completed a pilot program for employees of the local YMCA. A survey of human resource professionals was completed to assess local employer needs.
